Steam for Linux

Missed opportunity for Linux Steam?
I just noticed Steam now has 100 titles that run on Linux, that's a huge milestone in such a short time & it passed with no fanfare, no celebratory sale, nothing. Bit of a missed opportunity there don't you think?

If Valve celebrated milestones for every statistic they monitor, there would be a sale every day. :)

Most of them are DLCs anyway. So not really 100 games.

They celebrated on having 80 games during the launch so maybe they don't want to do it again so soon :x

No, they're only games. Including DLCs would be 185. http://store.steampowered.com/search/?os=linux&category1=998

I hope that 100th was L$D2

I only counted actual games, no DLC, no demos, no videos, just games, I still think it should have had some sort of fuss made over it. Oh Well they have their reasons I guess.
Marble 12 apr, 2013 @ 5:00
I'd still say the reason is that it's not all that impressive
lucifertdark 12 apr, 2013 @ 5:03
Really? going from nothing to 100 games in less than 6 months is not all that impressive? This time last year we didn't even have Steam for Linux, will you still say that once we have the same amount of games as Windows or Mac?
Marble 12 apr, 2013 @ 5:10
Keep in mind a lot of them were available on Linux to start with. I believe they launched with a sale, with some TF2 gear for people who tried it out. I think it's way too early to be celebrating any kind of milestone just yet. I don't remember them doing so with Mac or Windows at all.

I have no problem with that idea.

Not to ruin your celebration, but there is still not a single so-called AAA title in that list. Steam on linux and linux gaming won't be successful with even 10000 indie games, even if they're good. Until big companies start releasing games on linux, you ought to be praying, not celebrating.

One thing that would be great to get more games and to make those easier to play is if Epic and id brought all their Linux supported games to Steam. UT2004, Quake, etc would be great

I would love to have those games but bringing UE3 to Linux is probably a much more effective way because a lot of AAA games are already using it. I think it already has a working Linux code too like CE3.

I personaly dont want to see any of those so called "AAA" games on Linux. To me that's what's wrong with Windows gaming. Big named games that have more anti-gamer crap on them than should be allowed by law.

Just imagine seeing a gfwl title on Linux, really?! Atleast the indie games are true to us gamers, well for the most part.

There isn't any motivation for developers to port large projects. It isn't likely to increase the number of copies they sell, certainly not enough to warrant the expense. It would require staff with the appropriate skill sets to do it properly, and they aren't likely to invest in those staff or adding to their skill sets when their entire industry is built around DirectX technology from the start.
We won't see much from third-parties worth writing home about until Valve launch the Steambox, and it's still questionable if that development will relate to Linux in general or be concentrated on a Steambox platform.
