Try disabling network adapters that aren't in use.

OK, I found the problem.

LXDE (what I normally use) and GNOME both use different packages to connect to other devices. Steam only supports what GNOME uses.

I used Steam on LXDE without the issues you describe.

Same problem here, Slackware-current 32bit and XFCE, just installed on a different PC, on my main it runs on Slackware-current 64bit and XFCE.
