Steam for Linux

Steam for Linux

Dice has interest in Linux. Origin?

So there is interest in getting Battlefield on Linux. Considering that Dice belongs to EA, which have Origin instead of Steam, what do you guys think about this?

I think ♥♥♥♥ them. On the other hand, certainly a good news that finally a voice of reason is starting to overcome the mainstream ignorance of Free Open Source platforms.

They just realized now, that they are missing the train, so they want to jump on in before it takes of.

Thanks to Valve anyway.

Neither do I like EA, but (unfortunately) they have a lot of studios, so Linux support from them, even if only through Origin, would mean a huge boost.
EA has been copying Valve for so long. We'll probably see an OriginOS with OriginMachines very soon. They're probably still thinking on the Origin Controllers, which are hard to make if someone never has an ORIGINal (pun indeed) idea.

They haven't been ignorant of it. There just isn't a financially compelling reason to devote resources to it. Even now Linux only holds under 2% of the entirety of Steam, which is without a doubt the largest online PC games store. It is very representative of the whole PC gaming market.

So yeah, they might really want to get into it but the financial reasoning probably just isn't there for them at the time.

DICE is not it's own boss, Ea decides what happens.

LOL, no. Is <2% victory? Maybe once that share reaches something close to Windows', even without overtaking it. But for now, no. Barely anybody is using Linux on Steam.

DICE looking at making a linux port doesn't neccessarily mean origin. I've got crysis 2 and medal of honour on my steam account didn't need to install origin for them. EA won't risk makin an origin client for Linux/steamOS unless they know it'll make them money. a port of battlefield would probably only cost them a few hundred man hours. why risk making a whole distribution service for one game when they could just put it on the more successful steam and get 70% cut, it's still a bigger profit per game sale than a retail disc sale at gamestop/game

I know it's not linux but it looks like dice is looking for a software engineer with OpenGL experience.

Holy hell, people, we're not talking about EA, we're talking about DICE.

1. DICE is owned by EA.
2. DICE is a developer, not a publisher.

Both means DICE does what EA says and nothing more, nothing less.

That's like saying you are not talking about Google when you are talking about Youtube.

Indeed, hell it is.

I'm not using my Windows installation at the moment and the day I format it to make more place for Linux seems to be coming closer.

I only use my Windows installation for games like BF3 and BF4 beta but i will not buy BF4 if they do not support Linux even if they just support Steam OS only i'm fine with that.
