Steam for Linux

[Solved] [Ubuntu 15.04] Downloading games is incredibly slow
I just had a fresh install of Ubuntu 15.04 and downloading games on Steam is painfully slow (tonight in bytes/s when I otherwise have a snappy Internet connexion).

Changing servers won't help. I didn't set any limit to the bandwidth Steam can use.Rebooting won't help either. Downloads estimates are in days at best. For some reason, I can't check the load on Steam servers.

How could I fix this? Is it possible that something went wrong when installing Steam? I've succesfully downloaded games but it took far longer that it should have.

Any help welcome!

Edit It's only when downloading games really. Oddly enough I have no problems watching videos in the client. When downloading a game the speed would be decent at first but would steadily drop to 0 or almost.

too weird...
What kind of connection do you have? If WIFI, what brand? Who is your ISP?

I wonder if this is a ipv6 problem you could try disabling it. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IPv6?action=show&redirect=IPV6#Disabling_IPv6

It might also be a bad modem / router etc.

Just a few thoughts from other posts I've read.

Seems like you hit the bug where Steam floods your nameserver. Please try this workaround: https://steamcommunity.com/app/221410/discussions/2/616189106498372437/

Thanks for your answers!
I'm using a wired connexion (30Mb/s) and IPv4. Surprisingly my game seems to have downloaded overnight. But it took 4h yesterday to download 1.3Go and it has been stuck at 1.3Go for 2h, hence me being pessimistic. I can't consider my problem solved and I'll have a look to your 2 links. Thanks again!

I've just had a look at your article Sanguivor and I believe this could indeed solve my problem! Thanks a lot! Thread can be considered closed now.

Downloading games at 3.5Mb/s now, your magic works wonders Sanguivor!

It's unfortunate that the details of the bug have been known for a year and it still hasn't been fixed. And as a result the Steam on Linux client still performs a small scale denial-of-service attack on nameservers.

I solved my problem with slow downloads @Ubuntu using this command:

eatmydata steam
or
eatmydata32 steam

You can have some weird DNS nameservers configured! Solved my problem by editing resolv.conf by terminal command:
sudo nano /etc/resolv.conf

In command line editor comment by # sign ALL current nameservers
and use 'nameserver 8.8.8.8' instead. Example:

#nameserver 127.0.1.1
nameserver 8.8.8.8

To save file press Ctrl+X and 'Y', then Enter. No Steam reload needed.
