Steam for Linux

Not using direct rendering.
How do I turn it on. I've installed the proprietary drivers for my r9 270x, It's using the catalyst 14.4 drivers. How do I turn on direct rendering?

This isn't a solution but if glxinfo says you're using direct rendering then what claims that you aren't?

Steam
It happens if you're using a 3rd party repo and your 32-bit and 64-bit drivers are mismatched. Purge any repos related to mesa, X11 or graphich drivers, revert everything to stock and you'll have no issues.

How do I do that?
Install ppa-purge, then use it. E.g. if you are using xorg-edgers, run "sudo ppa-purge xorg-edgers" in a terminal.

I'm not using the xorg drivers. It says I'm using manually installed drivers, since I downloaded and installed the latest catalyst drivers.

So why did you ask the previous question then?

Since I figured it would work with that. I'm new to linux.

Try to run Steam using this command:

DRI_PRIME=1 LD_PRELOAD="/usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6 /usr/lib32/libstdc++.so.6 /usr/lib/libgcc_s.so.1 /usr/lib32/libgcc_s.so.1" ~/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/run.sh steam
I'll do that when I get back home to my computer with Ubuntu on it. If this works, will i have to use it everytime to launch steam?
A change was made to an OpenGL lib, and it has apparently screwed everything all up, I can't get direct rendering to work in Steam either.

Yes, until the problem gets fixed. I'm not sure if that's up to Valve or someone else, though.
Okay. So you think there's a problem with the steam client not recognizing tha I'm using direct rendering?

sudo gedit /etc/ld.so.conf.d/steam.conf

Add next two lines to file:

/usr/lib32
/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/mesa

Then execute:

sudo ldconfig
