they said some will be native and some will use Wine

They can only port their own games
some game developers will give sellers like GoG's the source code if they ask for it

I doubt GOG would port their games for them, though-- at the end of the day, it's really up to the developers.

I'm really glad to see so many new titles for Linux, anyhow. In the end, I can only figure this is going to be a huge win for gamers and developers; not being under the thumb of Microsoft et al.

I was talking with an uninformed colleague about this the other day (gaming on Linux) and she said "Sure, that's great, but I'm not interested in Linux because I use my computer for actual work." It made me laugh. "What you're not understanding, though, is that gaming is *the hard part* as far as computing goes, and that any actual work you need to do-- ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ around in an office suite, sending emails, browsing the web-- that's the easy part, has been possible for many, many years, and will only get easier from here." She just couldn't wrap her head around the idea that Linux is a healthy environment. "If it's so great, then, why don't more people use it?" I could only shake my head and laugh. "Because we fear that which we do not understand." Cheap shot? Maybe. Is it untrue, though?

look like to me they're porting games "If you are using Wine for some games, what are your thoughts on the possible backlash of what some may feel isn't a Linux version, but merely a Wine wrapped Windows game?

This is the train of thought we followed: by using Wine, we can offer you support for some games that would otherwise never be officially available on Linux. Most of those are pretty old titles and their source code was lost ages ago, so this is basically the only way to bring them to you. It's exactly the same situation with DOS games.

We are quite aware that a certain part of the Linux crowd is less than thrilled to see games brought to Linux through a back door, so to speak. That's why all Linux versions that are using Wine wrappers have that information explicitly included in the "game requirements" field on their gamecard." http://www.gamingonlinux.com/articles/gog-com-now-officially-support-linux-games.4076
Sure, I follow you-- what I'm saying, though, is that wrapping it in Wine is not as efficient as porting from source, and that if you gave GOG your source code for a Windows game, they wouldn't likely do the the heavy lifting for you. Cheers. :)
I'm fine with the older games being used with Wine. Newer games, I prefer them to be native ports like Civ V.
In all fairness even old dos games under windows still require dosbox interpitation so for dos based games its pretty much acceptable.... Most those older games eather a dont have source anymore or b triyng to port it to linux or even windows or mac os would be pretty much impossable.. Old dos games were typically written in Assembler, Pascal and C. Most game library dependancies were eather written in assembly language or obtianed eg most audio libraries under dos anymore dont even have source code they are just old re distributed binaries... Good luck ever tying to reverse enginner anything written in assembly language without knowing which language sets they used..

As far as modern games goes Native should always be the food of choice... Wine is just a cruch and never been a real advantage.. one its boarder line grey to infrengment 2 most the time the overhead vs preformance just isnt there and some applications may never work..
