Steam won't do anything
I recently installed Ubuntu 16.04
LTS and I installed steam. whenever I click on the it nothing happens litterally nothing shows up. all I see is the steam logo pop up on the side bar for 10 seconds and slightly blink colors and then it goes away and noting opens up. I have uninstalled it, re installed it. installed it from terminal and manually and nothing works. also the pinned discussions doesn't work either

You should run steam from the terminal so you can see any errors being produced.
1. Open terminal
2. just type "steam"
3. Make note of any errors shown in the terminal and try google from there?

I hope that helps :)

Ubuntu 16.04 & 16.10 Issues

- Steam is ROCK-SOLID in Ubuntu 16.04, so read on for this bullet-proof set of install instructions.

∘ did you install steam from using Package Manager or from steams download website?
∘ The Steam.deb Download package DOES NOT work in most instances!!! Do NOT Download it
∘ It does not install the needed 32-bit library dependencies that silly steam .deb needs (+1 GB of extra stuff)
• First be sure to have all Updates and Nvidia Proprietary Graphics Driver Installed and Intels microcode
‣ Reboot often up to 3-4 times until all updates are done/done/done

• here is my standard tip .....ALWAYS use Package Manager (or Software Center) or Terminal, silly but Steam's download says it is good for Ubuntu ... but fails to mention that it's only 12.04 YES 2012! Stupid but an easy fix is .... Package Manager OR Terminal
• 1. in Update Manager ... Settings / Ubuntu Software Tab
add (check off)...
Multiverse (this adds copyright software like Steam)
OR same thing using terminal (Always copy and paste AFTER the $)
‣ $ sudo add-apt-repository multiverse

• 2. Then you can install Steam either using terminal
∘ $ sudo apt-get install steam, OR and BETTER
∘ use ANY package manager (Software Center), and search for Steam as it will (Should) now show up (legally), but sadly not always

DONE - EASY-PEASY , .... EVERYTHING and ALL the DEPENDENCIES will also be installed.

• troubleshoot steam by opening it on "Terminal", awesome for troubleshooting and always (if errors) fix the FIRST one and retry.
• Good Luck,
• Cheers, Mark

So does everyone else. I should go check the Steam hardware survey results for 32bit installations but I doubt it's high. Anyway...

Please run steam in the terminal:
$ steam

Then paste in the result.
Also, as soon as steam ends/dies, grab the tail of syslog.
tail -n20 /var/log/syslog
You might want to trim the output of syslog because it can contain sensitive details about your system. At least just grab the lines that mention steam and maybe change your username/ip in those lines if it's mentioned.

It's really not. 14.04 is solid, 16.04 has lots of teething problems. I'm sure they'll be resolved eventually but they exist and are insurmountable for some users, right now.

edit: I checked, total number of 32bit OS installations:
Windows XP 32 bit: 1.55%
Windows Vista 32 bit: 0.16%
Windows 7: 6.00%
Windows 8: 0.12%
Windows 8.1: 0.29%
Windows 10: 1.47%
Total: 9.59%

So I guess there are still a fair few people on 32bit architectures but it's dropping.

Are you sure you're using the proprietary drivers for your graphics card?

If you are unsure go to:
System settings > Software & Updates > Additional Drivers > Select "Using NVIDIA binary driver..." > Reboot and try launch again?

I had this issue before and the above fixed it for me
Hwkiller Oct 27, 2016 @ 3:53pm
Try the pinned thread command again; this is usually due to libstdc++ being incompatible with the runtime.
