2. Who are you talking to who think this is ok? Virtually everybody thinks this is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ thing for Xavi to do and aren't happy with it.
Screw your sympathy for Xavi and his wasted opportunity. He's a millionaire. Save your compassion for the people who were tricked into giving their hard earned money thinking they were getting a full game. MANY of us won't ever even bother to load up Towns again, but Xavi still gets to keep the money.
Op is probably talking about people posting here:

And as all of the posts are not that much aggressive, probably because nothing good could happen from scaring away Xavi xD, at least until he makes the game open source
He did, on the Towns forum, I should have said.
I understand people are annoyed, they should be. I won't make any excuses but he did have to deal with his wife having cancer, what he did still can't be written off, like selling it as finished, simply not a moral thing to do. However, I won't be so quick to judge him without knowing the guy.
He still has a chance to redeem himself in the future.
Yeah, I just looked it up myself (and was about to post the link when you did) and apparently he really did post a response. From what I can tell, there isn't really anyone saying it was ok that he vanished for an extended period of time because he got burned out. It's mostly people just being thankful that he actually said SOMETHING and trying to gently push him toward the idea of open source.
Sadly, what i'm seeing from his response is that he seems to be looking for a way to maintain complete control over his broken product while still being able to string us along. Call that a pessimistic viewpoint but when he starts talking about how open source "affects us" and how he's starting to like the idea of hiring someone else to work on the game, I can't really see it any other way.
That's going to take a TON of work for me, especially given he's still talking about the game as if it isn't a broken PoS. If he does hire someone and we haven't seen significant progress within the next 6 months (after hiring the guy,) i'm writing him off completely. I'd still suggest everyone assume this game is just as dead as Ben claimed until we actually see a regular patching schedule emerge. A couple new patches aren't gonna cut it to prove that claim wrong.
But, I did buy it for £5 on the bases it was an early access, in which case I knew what I could be getting myself into. The issue is when it came onto Steam as a full game, it was an outright lie, and as it won't be finished I feel for those of you who purchased it at full price.
It isn't acceptable.
Ohh boy hope it hits open sources, before someone scares him away.
I'm not sure if valve can do anything about it, it is something they will need to address (unfinished games from early access) It is also an awkward point legally as well, i'm not sure it is covered in consumer rights etc
Indeed. I think the responses in that thread were the right way to go, which is one reason why i'm not going to be a part of that thread. That being said, i'm not holding out hope that it will end well.
One of those will manage what the Niche want, Towns proved surprisingly popular on Steam ... that will be noticed by smaller game studios.
Also, check out Banished, it's looking really promising, too. And there's still Gnomoria.
Banished does look nice, not seen it before so thank you! (I've loved games like this ever since I got into Dwarf Fortress, which i still believe nothing has topped yet) I will look into Banished some more.
It was sold as alpha on their website. One of the biggest controversies surrounding the "release" of Towns was that it was officially alpha right up until its launch on Steam with the supposed beta (taking place with a limited group) only being minor patch work to get it working properly through Steam.
As for the other titles, it's unfortunate for them but I think i'm done with this particular niche for quite some time still. I'm more insterested in the DK clones being made right now.
At least Clockwork Empires says it supports Mac at launch day, and the launch happens "Spring 2014" which should be reasonably soon, I hope.
Well at least they're being up front about the fact that their games don't actually work on anything but windows. Didn't Towns have a problem that prevented the game from being playable on Mac?
