Far Cry® 3
First Outpost Clearing Mission: How to get Undetected Bonus??
On the very first Outpost Clearing mission, it's straightforward to kill all 5 pirates without being detected. *However* the mission doesn't end until you kill the guard dog also, and I've found it impossible so far to kill the dog silently, which appears to be a requirement to get the Undetected XP bonus.

I've tried the silenced pistol, as well as the one hunting syringe I could make, but the weapons I have access to at this point can't kill animals in one hit, which looks to be necessary. Also the game requires you do this mission immediately, with no option to explore and get enough funds/XP for a better weapon. This is on Normal or Hard difficulty, btw.

Does anyone know how to do this one, or should I give up and move on?

hunt and upgrade your ♥♥♥♥ till you can get the sniper rifle with the silencer then boom you can do every outpost undetected. Has worked EVERY time for me.
I can't recall if I did it w/o being discovered or not (it's been a while considering I have 2/3 the map done). In the end, it doesn't really matter. You will get TONS of experience and quicikly through other missions.

So fast in fact, that I at any one point will have 2-6 unused skill points saved up just because I want to make sure I am able to buy the more interesting skills as they become unlocked or because I want to wait until I know I'll be using that skill repetitively.

IMO, you should move on. When you have better weapons and skills, then try to get the bonus.
In the grand scheme of the game that extra 1000 XP for doing it undetected means nothing, you will have TONS of chances to gain XP.

Yeah, I'm hearing that it's way too easy later on, but this first mission in particular looks impossible to get the undetected status, as you are so limited in what you can do beforehand, and you can't break off the mission once started. Perhaps there are hidden loot boxes that would give you enough money to get a better weapon.

Also, I have noticed loot indicators on my map where I cannot locate the stash (this would be near the buildings very near to the first hunting ground. Should I be able to find these early on?
They are in caves underneath. The challenge is finding those cave entrances, not all are obvious.
I did it. Knife em Take out all the guard first then the dog. But yes it takes a few swipes to do it as well as took a lot of damage.
Toco I've done exactly this multiple times, with no joy. Now perhaps I haven't been careful enough in approaching the dog, so he doesn't become alerted before I attack; did you wait until he was digging in the ground, or have some other tip?
Ok, I figured it out finally. You are given a sniper rifle for free after the first radio tower, doh! I just hadn't realized that or seen the notification. One bullet takes out the dog, and I got the 1500XP bonus. End of thread, but wow, the game doesn't allow you to go back to the village to choose a better loadout, you pretty much have to start the entire game over, and know to choose a sniper rifle before the mission ever begins! That's an immersion breaker :)

Just leave the dog for last, once you knife all the guys then just shoot the dang dog. Once all the guys are killed you can make all the noise you want

There are plenty of out posts just wait till the next one.
I'm necroing the thread for anyone wondering about this on their first playthrough as it is one of the first results that comes up when searching this. In one word : grenades.

TL;DR : after silently taking down all the guards, look around for the dog, preferably have the "cook grenade" skill to cook a grenade and then throw it at the dog so that it dies immediately without detecting you. if you didn't take that skill, throw a rock at whatever spot you feel is best, then immediately throw the grenade at the same spot, I however have not tested this so I can't promise results.

As people have pointed out, taking out the guards with planned takedowns or silencer headshot kills is completely fine, the problem is that this early in the game, you have a limited amount of firepower to deal with the dog quickly without alerting it, but the grenade is capable of doing so.

As I'm guessing most people do, the strat is to take out the guards first (there's 5 of them), from the side where Dennis drops you off, the dog will hang out in the top right corner of the outpost, try to not alert it as best you can while taking out the guards to make it easier for yourself to manipulate it later on.
Once you're done with the guards, scout around for the dog's location, imo it's easier to have it directly in front of you, but you don't need to know exactly where it is just have a good idea to be able to lure it towards it's death.
Then it's best to have the "cook grenade" skill, so that you can lure the dog to a location (skip this part if you already know exactly where it is), cook a grenade (wait for 3 ticks before throwing it), throw it onto the dog and boom, you're done. I have only tested this with the cook grenade skill but I'm assuming even without it you could lure the dog to a location, immediately throw a grenade as it runs towards it and it should get blown up as soon as it gets to where you threw your rock at.

The undetected bonuses for outposts allow for more options than you'd expect, you can make noise, you can blow stuff up, the enemies can be on alert, but as long as an enemy doesn't fully detect you, it will count. Cooking grenades to take care of any enemies left in an outpost """""silently"""""", damned dogs included is a good option, .... which I feel stupid for not having realized until now.

good stuff
haha thanks for reviving this long-forgotten thread. I 100%'d this game back in the day, loving every minute of it (except for the eye-rolling ending). Far Cry 2 is still my favorite in this franchise, with it's superior map system, and Joseph Conrad Heart of Darkness plot, but FC3 is right after it, for all the joy in exploration it gave me. I got FC6 free with my videocard, can't wait for the release!
This thread is so mundane but i read it for nostalgia
