Other games on steam like TJD?
Hey all,

Well ... I'm looking for another game, thanks to The Journey Down (TJD). A game *like* The Journey Down, because I really liked it and I want more

I've been replaying the classics but the problem is ... I've played them all already. Don't get me wrong - I still love them to death. But playing TJD awakened that excitement of playing something new that reminded me of 1998, getting past puzzles before the Grim Fandango Q&A'ers had gotten that far (anyone remember that?).

I search through the Steam store and I see games like The Cave that, by seeing the developers, I would hope would be what I'm looking for but it's all ... platformy stuff. I want dialogue, interesting locations to explore, character development, items to collect and try to combine in my inventory - you know: the good old adventure game bread & butter. Looking through the Adventure category on steam it looks like a whole bunch of jumping games or tries-too-hard-to-be-indie.

I'm on the kickstarters for a few games that fit the bill of what I'm asking for but they aren't out yet. The best suggestion I've heard so far is Telltale's Strong Bad games. FWIW I thought TJD had more charm than what I've seen of Telltale.

Any ideas? Thanks!

FWIW my favorite games are COMI (Monkey Island 3) and Grim Fandango

If you are looking for point&click adventure games, there's a lot of them on steam. I'll try to list some of them here: LucasArts Adventure Pack (The Dig + Indiana Jones Last Crusade, Indiana Jones Fate of Atlantis, Loom), Alter Ego, AlternativA, A New Beginning - Final Cut, TellTale Back to the Future (not exactly point&click), Big Brain Wolf, The Blackwell bundle (Legacy, Unbound, Convergence and Deception), Broken Sword Trilogy (3 first games), Ceville, Deponia and Chaos on Deponia, Chronicles of Mystery: The Scorpio Ritual, Culpa Innata, Dead Mountaineer's Hotel, Dracula: Origin, The Longest Journey+Dreamfall bundle, Edna & Harvey: Harvey's New Eyes, Emerald City Confidential, Gemini Rue, Hamlet, Hector trilogy, Jack Keane, Jolly Rover, Jurassic Park: The Game, Kaptain Brawe, King's Quest Collection, Lost Horizon, Lume, Machinarium, Mata Hari, Monkey Island Special Edition (1 and 2), Nikopol: Secrets of the Immortals, Post Mortem, Puzzle Agent (1 and 2), Puzzle Bots, Resonance, Runaway trilogy, Sam&Max 3 Seasons, Sherlock Holmes Pack (6 games), Space Quest Collection, Still Life (1 and 2), Stroke of Fate: Operation Valkyrie, Strong Bad, Syberia (1 and 2), Tales of Monkey Island, The Book of Unwritten Tales (and The Critter Chronicles too), The Dark Eye: Chains of Satinav, The Dream Machine, The Next BIG Thing, The Tiny Bang Story (not exactly adventure, but good), The Walking Dead, The Whispered World, Yesterday... and there's more.
I'm planning in making two lists of all adventures games (point&click and not p&c) on Steam. When it's done, I'll tell you.

The Book of Unwritten Tales is incredible. The voice acting and artwork are beautiful. It's a little slow, though - but that's not always bad for this type of game.

There's also What Makes You Tick: A Stitch in Time[lassiegames.com]. It's fairly recent, but felt like playing one of the classics. Its style is different, but somehow very reminiscent of CMI, incidentally. It even has the same red X cursor with a verb coin for interaction.

eta: ok, sorry, I somehow completely missed the "on steam" part of your post! I hope you'll still check out the game I linked, I think you'd enjoy it (if you haven't played it yet), and the devs really deserve the sale.

There are a few adventures on Greenlight that are very much in the style of the classics, btw, vote them up: The Ghost Pirates of Vooju Island
Haunted

I went over Paulo's awesome, extensive list (thank you, by the way, I think I might save this for future reference!), and then the 'Adventure' category in the store, and found a couple that seemed to have slipped through the cracks.
- Primordia
- Secret Files trilogy - Tunguska, Puritas Cordis, Secret Files 3
- Kentucky Route Zero - now this one I wouldn't call a traditional adventure, because it places a lot more focus on atmosphere, story, and exploration than actual puzzling, but it's definitely worth checking out. I'm also a fan of classic adventures (CMI happens to be my favourite as well!), and while different, I enjoyed this game immensely. It also has some text adventure sequences outside of the main story line. Be advised though, this is an episodic game, and only the first part is out as of yet. Acts II through V should be released over the course of the following year.

RPS pointed me to an "adventure" musical today that seems great: http://www.dominiquepamplemousse.com/ (not on Steam; a very short demo is available)

Also, Kentucky Route Zero and Machinarium are some of my favorite recent adventure games and both have wonderful artwork. Before buying KRZ you may want to try a free mini-game by the same authors that introduces you to a similar atmosphere and textual interface: http://kentuckyroutezero.com/limits-and-demonstrations/

What about "Samorost 2"? It's one here for... 2.99, maybe? I'm not sure I got it when it was one sale. (^.^); It's kind of short, though. Oh! And the first one is online FOR FREE. It's by the creators of "Machinarium", Amanatia. I would have suggested "The Dream Machine", but someone already did. Excellent game, that one! Highly recomend it. *Fingures fake mustache, spins cane, dofs top hat, and leaves with the twirl of a cape*

Yet another awesome point and click adventure is A Vampyre Story by former LucasArts designer Bill Tiller (not sold on Steam, though). The only drawback is that it's uncertain if the story will ever be continued.

Don't forget the modern retro-classics
Ben There Dan That / Time Gentlemen Please
It comes as a double pack at a low price and is fantastic even if it doesn't have voice acting.

I've personally bought more than 50 copies of the game and given them away to friends.

Yeah, Wadjet Eye have produced brillant adventure games recently (noted above). Resonance being my favourite one so far. Though, also The Blackwell Bundle would be a good purchase cause in the Fall/Autumn they should be releasing Part 5!!!
