Never played Half Life
As the topic says I never played any Half Life game before. Wanted to dive into the Half Life universe now. So what is the best place to start? Should I start with the Black Mesa Mod or should I just start with HL2?

I must warn you, BM is much more difficult than HL2. I would recommend starting with HL2, then Ep1, Ep 2 then finish with BM. Those games were much more enjoyable than BM. :gordon:

If you want to experience Gordon Freeman's backstory, play HL1 or Black Mesa. If not, go straight to HL2. I do have to say though, HL1 isn't as polished as Black Mesa (duh), but that can make it a little easier at times.

No don't play Black Mesa first, this mod is more for people who are familiar with the series already. Its in many places very different from the original and you would stuck at some places because it uses some puzzles from HL2 and the episodes but are poorly implemented. Play Half Life Source or Half Life 2 and the episodes first, whatever you prefer and then you can play Black Mesa.

If you don't like the graphics, then there are many mods out there which improves them. For the Half Life 2 series i suggest the latest "Cinematic Mod". In this mod there are optional new character models and there is new music but DO NOT CHANGE them and KEEP THE ORIGINAL music and models because otherwise it would destroy the artstyle and the idea of Half Life 2. Sadly i don't know any graphic mods for Half Life Source though and as far as i know most of them aren't compatible anymore because of Valves recent patches, maybe you find some which work but i think the graphics are good enough anyway though.

i recently played half life thinking i would just slog through it to get caught up for the plot of 2, but I enjoyed playing it so much that I quickly finished Blue Shift and Opposing Force as well. Only took a few days to get through all three, definitely worth it in my opinion. Oh also, I didn't notice that much of an upgrade playing Half Life: Source instead of Half Life, but maybe that's just me. Also also, I agree with Flowmad about leaving Black Mesa until later.

Black mesa stops before Xen, which is one of if not the most important part of HL1. You should play through HL1 or at least cheat to get to the Xen level and continue where you left off from on black mesa.

I'd say play Half-Life (or Source) first, then HL2, Ep1, Ep2. I wouldn't recommend Black Mesa, it's incomplete, so you miss the ending, and it seems to be aimed at people who've played the original.

play black mesa if you want the true feeling get half-life source or half-life if you want mods then get hl2 and hl2 ep 1 and 2

I suggest playing HF 1 first, so you know what went on before half-life 2.
