How to get cards in HL2?

I have played the game through earlier couple of times but do i have to play it through again to get cards???

Nope, you just start the game. You don't even have to play it, you can be in the menu. Eventually you'll get a card, it's randomly dropped.

You can alt-tab out of the game and it still works.
