I cannot get this game to start

I've been having this problem for days. The hl2.exe doesn't seem to work. I get the startup screen and the valve logo, and then nothing happens and the screen goes away, and the game doesn't start up. I've tried redownloading steam, deleting the half life 2 and redownloading it, starting the game in different launch options (such as -window and -32bit), I tried updating my graphics card. NOTHING WORKS!

Figured out how to resolve my issue - hopefully this helps you as well. So, like the OP, removing/uninstalling the game via Steam was one of my first attempts at resolving the problem, but re-installing did nothing to further my progress. I uninstalled once more, looked at the installation directory /steamapps/common/half-life 2/ and noticed that I still had DLL files that weren't removed. I deleted everything inside /half-life 2/, cleared Recycle Bin, and then re-installed. Issue resolved.

Do you have HL2 in the Orange Box or is it seperate? If it's the latter, try using a really thorough uninstaller like Revo Pro, and remove all trace elements of the game from your pc. Then reboot and do a fresh install. If it's part of the Orange Box, uninstall the lot and try again.

Edit. Or, if you have added any mods or done some home decorating of HL2, that could have interfered with the executable. In which case, remove anything (HL2 Mods) that may have been installed if all else fails.

I have added one half life 2 mod which is called Grey. I completely uninstalled it. It gives me the "could not load library client". Left 4 Dead doesn't work either.
