Please, before i start, refrain from any hateful coments. I would like this thread to be a mature, orderly discussion. Now, that thats out of the way, i'm going to drop the bomb. What in the heck is so "amazing" about this game? The graphics are bad (Yes, i know that the game was made in 2004 and they were good for the time),there is no obvious story, or so far that ive observered. I have watched a couple episodes of a professional letsplay of the game to get the feel of it before buying, and i must say, im not impressed at all. Ill put a link to the letsplay (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfBY9Ckzhvk), but so far, all thats happened is about 10 minutes of walking through a facility to get a suit, and then testing a rock. Then, still without a word of meaning dialoge, besides small talk, aliens just randomly and un precedently show up for no apparent reason at all. Then you spend the next 3-4 hours wandering around in the maze-like compound trying to get to the surface. All whilst you fight the same generic 3-4 differnt alien types over, and over, and over, and over. When you do meet a survivor, however, there is not much exciment. About half of the AI is botched and just plain broken, and they cycle through the same 3 phrases seemingly at random. Thats even excluding the fact that if you look closely in the begining when everything is seemingly in order, there are only about 4 character models per race and gender distributed between 50+ AI.
You know nothing about the main character execpt his name, which makes it extremly hard to get emotionally attached to him and his current plight.Not to even mention the difficulty! Some parts of the game are far too easy, in the sense that a complete newby to FPS's could beat it in their sleep. Then some parts are extremly challenging, if you are going to make a game, please set it to one general difficulty. In the description of this game on steam, it says it had an award winning story, however, so far i have seen not a bad story, not an okay story, but literally NO STORY. Literally nothing is explained about anything.(At least until you reach the surface).
In conclusion to my rant, i would like to say as i did in the begining, please leave only constructive criticism in the comments. My intentions are not to start a flame war, I would only like to see why YOU think this is a good game, and with that. Thank you all for reading, and please share your thoughts in the comments below

This is my profesional, mature comment. This game was revolutionary. It perfected horror with gameplay along with an enviorment that made players think on their think to survive. This game leaps and bounds over all other shooters for its incredible pacing, and the overall feeling of control. All that small talk is supposed to pound into your head that this is jsut an ordinary guy thrown into a bad situation or to quote the gman at the start of half life 2 "The right man in the wrong place can make all the difference in the world". Play it and you will understand. Then play half lfie 2 and appreciate the fact without that game we wouldnt have a realistic engine on any game today. Half life is an experience that everyone must feel once in their lives.

BTW you said you know nothing and you find it hard to connect with Gordon Freeman.... that's because Valve specializes in having the player reflect themselves on the charatcer. Same with the portal franichise, or as I like to say "I am freeman, you are freeman, we are all freeman" its because he can be whoever you want him to be that makes him so memorable. And the fact you go from doubted, every day scientist to what people potray you as a prophet in the second one, this frnchise puts you behind the wheel and never takes you away from it other than to show you the kick-ass stuff they did with thier engine i.e. the tram ride in the first one and the capsule line in the citadel in the second.

Oh okay, i feel really dumb now, i was referring to a remake of the first one all along...so i havn't seen Half life 2, i suppose i should take back all those things i said. Oh, and by the way, you sir, dbrinson98, should get a medal for not freaking out when i said i didnt like half life. :)
