The fight to The Horse, gunship

In the 11th chapter, Follow Freeman, in the battle just before entering the citadel Gordon reaches the top of a ruined building with a stash of rockets to help him down two striders. During the fight a Gunship flys overhead takes a few potshots and then flies off. On my very first play through how ever, back in the day, the gunship actually stuck around for the battle and I had to destroy it whilst dodging fire from two striders. It was the most epic battle i have had in the half life series. The problem is that the gunship now just flys over head like i said and does not stay and fight. I was wondering if any one else experienced this?

Did it only happen the once for you? or u get to fight the gunship every time?

No, I only get to hit it with one rocket before it flies off.

I do have some memories fighting it, though, so I managed to get the old pirate version I used to play a few years ago, but it's the same, the gunship just passes by.
