Half-Life 2
Increasing FOV past 90
I'm really enjoying Half-Life 2, except it was making me incredibly motion sick after 30 minutes of playing. I play tons of FPS games and this has only happened to me when playing 8-Bit first person games like Ultima or Phantasy Star. I can play TF2, Doom, Quake, CoD, Minecraft, etc. for 12 hours straight no problem.

Anyway is seems like the problem is FOV being too small in HL2, but the options only let you increase it to 90. This definitely helps, but I want to boost it up to 100 or 110 just to be sure I don't puke into my keyboard.

If I do this:

sv_cheats 1; fov 100; sv_cheats 0

will that still let me get achievements?

I've tried changing the config.ini file, but it always sets the desired fov back to 90.

You said that you can play TF2, but that game is made in the Source Engine too and the FOV only goes up to 90. How do you not get motion sick on that?
I have a couple theories. Also, I did get the FOV to increase more, but the 90 degree thing is coded into the game at a more basic level than I thought. Basically the FOV doesn't go up anymore no matter what, setting it higher will only effect Gordon's arm and weapon.

I think the problem is that HL2 requires you to look up and down and left and right alot as you search for secrets or search for the solution to a particular puzzle. Even though TF2 gets crazy, most of the time you are focused on a single target in the distance. It's like how looking out the side of a car can make some ppl motion sick. HL2 requires you to look across the surfaces of everything more. Having to look around at things in the airboat may have made it worse also.

Looking online, this isn't just me. A lot of ppl have this problem with HL2, and most of them usually say the same thing: FPSes have never been a problem.

Motion sickness or not, I'm loving the game. FOV 90 is much nicer than 75.
The REAL FOV cvar is fov_desired. Not fov. Still though, I think it may be hardcoded for 90 FOV max.

Newer games ported from consoles often have a FOV of less than 75.
Portal 2 (source engine also) after many pages of requests finally provided users with fov control all the way to 180 with the cl_fov command, but it's only present in that game.

I swear in Half Life 2 after getting your hazard suit it would finally let you change fov with fov_desired, but it seems that they changed it so you can no longer change it after getting the hazard suit (90deg+ that is.)

Older versions might allow it, but then you don't get the benefit of other improvements of the updated versions of the game.

What I don't understand is that it's disabled even in single player with sv_cheats 1. Why? You're not cheating anyone else, nor getting achievements, so why disable it even in this case?

Ya rendering a higher FOV than what your monitor(s) take up of your eye FOV is going to be warped, but some people are willing to deal with the warp for the benefits of higher FOV.
