Yeah. While you don't NEED to play Half Life 1 to get the jist of Half Life 2, there will be quite a few unexplained things that were explained in the first game e.g. who Eli and Kleiner are, as well as what the Black Mesa Incident is.
Why not buy it on Steam? The PC Version is the best version and it's probably cheaper than whatever you'll find at Gamestop.
