Half Life 2 not loading

I woke up today but could not load Half Life 2 (play it). Can I please have some help, I know another person with the same issue who probally could also use help.

Define "not loading."
Not launching or the game isn't loading?

Have your tried verifying the cache and re-installing?

By load, I mean when I click play the screen: preparing to launch Half Life 2 pops up, but sits there for an oddly long amount of time (longer than ussaul). I did not reinstall, but I did verify cache which did not work. If I was to reinstall, would I lose my data?

I am currently reinstalling the game, hopefully this works, thanks for your help Bro : ) I will update you on what happens if something goes mad wrong.

I think the game has to be updated, I am new to steam, how do I update my games?

If you go to the game properties you can choose your update options.
It usually happens when you try to start the game.

well I have it to update asap, so I still don't understand why I can't load the game

Couldn't find any thing useful, but I think I will give up on the issue, I was halfway through the game anyways, besides that, thanks for the help
