Xbox 360 Control Testing
So, we have had control support ready since launch, although not fully polished. The reason we took it out was that players need updated drivers for the controller to work correctly, the ones that come pre-packed with your controller don't work.

If you would like to try out the game with your Xbox 360 Controller, here's how to do it:

1) Update your drivers here (make sure you get the right ones for your OS!):
http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/en-us/p/xbox-360-controller-for-windows#support

2) Put a file named "xbox2" (no file extension!) in your game directory ( Steam\steamapps\common\hotline_miami\ )

3) Make sure your controller is plugged in and calibrated correctly!

4) Now you're ready to launch the game. The controller should be working by the time you reach the start menu (not the steam dialog).

To disable the controller, simply remove the "xbox2" file from your directory and restart the game!

The tutorial doesn't display the correct keys in the current build and you will not be able to re-configure the controls.

Correct controller setup is as follows:
-Start or A to select.
-Back to return or pause the game.
-Left stick to move.
-Right stick to aim.
-Right trigger to shoot.
-Left trigger or right shoulder to pick up.
-A to do a ground kill.
-Press right stick to lock on to nearest enemy.
-Start or A to advance dialogue.

There are some minor annoyances with the controls currently that we will do our best to smooth out. Feedback is very welcome and will help us get everything right!

PS. If your controller is not plugged in correctly before launching the game or the game cannot find it for some reason, you will experience massive slow down.

I just played a level with my wireless 360 controller and it worked perfectly. Menus worked, no noticeable performance difference, and the controls felt good.

Doesn't seem to work for me, just create a text document called 'xbox2' right?

When making the text document in notepad, Save As and put the filename in quotation marks without the .txt.

Also, I couldn't seem to pause, the screen would just flash black for a second. I also couldn't progress after the prelude Metro, after dumping the briefcase I couldn't kill anyone, and the foe just ran off the screen.

I am not sure if that is an issue when using the controller or just a general issue with the game though.

What Tattooth said. I just created a blank text file called xbox2 and got rid of the extension.

It's works fine.
But, there are some difference(or missing) on the A button in the tutorial.

I think the A button's(ground kill button) explanation was mixed up with the mouse's right button.
('A Button' -> written in 'Right Button')

Sorry about my bad writing. I believe that you guys will understand my feedback. Xd

Doesn't work for me. (wireless)

Got it working after I remembered how to remove the file extension.

I didn't need to install those drivers and after creating the xbox2 file my 360 wireless controller seems to be working fine - at least through the opening stages, triggers work, face buttons work, sticks work. Back works? Anything else I can test? This is the first time the game actually ran for me since release, seems great.

The reason I didn't install the drivers is because I only bought my 360 wireless dongle thing this year, and it has Win7 on the box. I believe that the disc they provide has the most up to date drivers and it already works with games like BF3, Borderlands 2 and so on. You might want to tell users about that.

I am now going to go play the hell out of this game! :) But I will leave a tiny request for D-pad support in the menus, and to swap BACK and START if possible... and maybe when you move using the left stick your character should face that direction (though yes, it's a twin stick shooter and I'm probably a hethen for suggesting that....)

Working fine now. If you are still struggling with your xbox2 file open up notepad, dont write anything in it. Click save as, call it "xbox2" (speechmarks included) and save it to the hotline miami folder. You should be good to go if you have followed the other steps.

Honestly nobody should need to install the drivers if they've been using a 360 controller on PC for a while, they aren't exactly new...

The button for a ground 'finish him' gets rebound in the opening sequences/chapter - intentional? It's A in the tutorial and then RB (right shoulder) in the segment after the first mission (briefcase drop). A does nothing when the dude is on the ground.

Also I notice that sometimes the reticle follows the direction your character is moving, other times not.

I don't think these things necessarily subtract from the game.... :)

For whatever reason, the control stick works, but neither the start or face buttons do. I installed the most up-to-date drivers, and I had the controller working in another program before I started. I do, however, have an offbrand controller (PDP Afterglow Wired Xbox 360 controller), maybe that is the problem?

I can't get past the menus, but the select button works fine for exiting the game.

I have an official 360 wired controller and up to date drivers (I think) and it works perfectly fine.
I guess i'm lucky.
The game feels easy but balanced thanks to the "lock target". (I was using a mapper from gamepad to keyboard on the keyboard version of the game before that and it was awful)
