I've got a message like this too :

When pressing abort, the menu displays normally but I the game doesn't respond to my keyboard inputs and there is no sound, I am forced to alt-tab out of the game.

dennis from dennaton here! we are removing the steam dll (that is causing this problem) for now so that you all can enjoy the game! achivements will not be available during this time but the game will work!
we are working on fixing this asap! sorry about this!

game won't even start, on my laptop: windows xp sp3, Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD, 3gb ram, Intel Core 2 Duo T5870 (2.0 GHz).
i try couple settings provide by game like windowed, alienware, v-sync, rumble, change resolution, nothing work. no any error screen, just crush.
