Game not starting

When I hit "play" on the main menu, it goes to a black screen with gray lines splitting it into 4 sections. I've let it sit for a few minutes, nothing happens. I've restarted both the game and my computer, neither has helped. Is there something I'm missing, or...? Not sure what to do here.

Pressing K at the black screen with grey lines got me to the controls/loading screen, now I have the white screen + music problem mentioned in another thread

make sure you have a opengl video cards with the latest drivers

I, too, am stuck on a black screen with two gray lines splitting the screen up into four quadrants after hitting play in the main menu. I briefly see the helicopter loading animation after pressing play and then see the black screen quadrants.

i suspect the integrated intel graphics is the problem.
few games run on those
even 2d ones.

when i press play a box pops up saying that the game crashed... sometimes i just hate steam
