Gigaware USB controller

I've been trying to use a Gigaware USB game controller with this game. It works OK with Strike Suit Zero and the Polynomial on Steam in Linux. Indeed, the controller moves the mouse cursor around on the linux desktop. However, none of the controls appear to do anything to control Captain Video in this game. I can find no settings that let me change the default game controller. Am I missing something?

Qjoypad is a good workaround, but why is this game not letting people use/reconfigure their controllers? This is a major design flaw, especially when they nag you about how better the game is with one. I have a simple 10 button digital logitech controller which works out of the box in most games, emulators and wine and is registering fine using jstest on /dev/input/js0
