Same thing happened with me and a mate, he's had the old riptide and i bought the definitive edition so we could co op. Turns out it's impossible because the definitive version has been coded differently.

They are taken as different games in the System/Game Coding so you will have to buy the definitive edition as you cannot buy the originals anymore, (maybe at your game store you can)
