Jump (movement)

ok, can someone please explain in detail how all the move commands work? I want to make a simple platformer game however, When i make my character object jump, it flys up into space, or it teleports around the screen. I'm new to this and have read the "help" however I'm still having trouble coming up with a method to simply get my character object to jump right.

Toward the bottom of the thread in that link is a nice explanation complete with some pictures, so it will be more helpful than anything I could post directly here. If this doesn't solve your jumping issue or if you need to set up a general environment with a floor and such or work out other movement issues as well, I will do my best to help.
