HMH Has Stopped Working...

... is what I'm told when ever I simply try to start up single player. I'm not certain what the problem could even be or how to fix it. Did fresh installs, cleaned out the steam cloud sync...
any leads or tips that could direct me to fixing this issue? I'd love to play it; the game was a gift after all. This only seems to happen with Hero 30 mode.
