Certain classes thrive on dine and dash, while others require a slower approach.
With a necromancer, you really need to take and hold the larger cities and the occassional gallows. Other areas are less important, but you want some iron at least. The larger villages and up gives hands (the necromancers' special resource) while farms and such give only a little gold. As necromancer you can raise defenders out of the town's original defenders, if you have a spare apprentice you won't mind if stands drooling in the fields occasionally.
The troll king is the ultimate beginner's faction. Once Mum comes to help out, you get fungus and can make (ancient) forests into (ancient) troll forests, which spawn semi-independents who will help defend and capture territory for you without your interaction.
