Can't load interval 1

I'm not seeing anyone having the same problem that I'm having, but hopefully someone knows how to solve this. I can't load the first interval at all. I can start a new game, watch the opening cinematic (or skip it), then it goes to the loading screen for interval 1, but never makes any progress. Just sits there "loading" until I tab out and kill the game from the task manager.

I'm on Windows 10 Home 64 bit, version 1703
Core I7 4770K
GTX 1080 Founders Edition

I tried setting all the graphics to minimum, didn't work.

I tried downloading save files off the internet and just loading any other save file, that also didn't work, but for a different reason. When I try that, any save file I try to load it tells me "Disconnected from Server".

I tried setting the compatibility mode for Windows XP SP3, but the FEARXP.exe file does not have a compatibility tab when I right click and go to properties. The Launcher.exe file in the same folder does have the compatibility tab, but setting that to Windows XP SP3 didn't seem to affect anything.

Anything else I can try here?

Addendum, also tried repairing the game files through Steam, and I've now tried the "Troubleshoot compatibility" utility on the FEARXP.exe file. Neither solved the problem.

I have the same problem, won't load Interval 1.

Managed to get it to work. It was windows 10 protected folders preventing FEARXP.exe from loading so once I allowed it access using Windows Defender Security Centre no more problem. My windows 10 is version 1709
