He might think that releasing the source would detract from the sales of his next game. Though, if anything, releasing the source would be nothing but good publicity and might relieve Data of any remaining responsibility to "finish" development of CC (even though he openly refuses to accept that he's obligated to finish it).

I predict that a lot of effort will be spent on sweeping CC under the rug along with its disgruntled user base when Planetary Pioneers comes out, unless Data makes some move to appease the unhappy CC customers. Releasing the source code might be a good first step in that direction. ... Assuming there are any fans left who are dedicated enough to put the work into polishing CC into the gem it deserves to be.

Yes, an uncut unpolished gem and a finished gem are both indeed gems. There are differences between them though, don't you think? The finished gem has much greater current value while the unfinished gem has greater potential.

Which type of gem is Cortex Command right now, and which type does it deserve to be? (Please don't answer with more pedantic nitpicking.)
