Many red priests are shown to produce balls of flame in their hands.
Beric Dondarrion is said to use real magic to light his blade whilst Thoros uses quickfire.
Other characters change appearance at wll (literally). Then there's the necromancer people that steal the dragons. There's also three-eyed ravens and people who become trees. Skin-changers galore.
I'm also pretty damn sure Varys has some sort of magical abilities (not even related to his spying).
Then there's the Children of the Forest who literally do throw flaming exploding balls of magic.
So no, Alester is accurate, I'd say. Generally the game fits quite well into GoT's universe, unlike the tv show
Also aside from the effect-grabbing-tv-adaption we only know 3 Red Priests so far and one is just a converted drunk.
