Two questions: 1) built in editors and 2) play order
Hello all.

I have read that the correct play order in to start with Avernum: Espape from the Pit, Crystal Souls (Number 3 = ?) and 4,5 and 6 are last. However, where is number 3 and if I play the newly created games first, won't the graphics of 4,5,6 pale in comparison? So I am looking for a definitive answer on these two questions.

My next question deals with the built in editors? Which games have them and how do you activate them?

Many thanks in advance.

You need to decide for yourself which play order you want. As you said, there's two:

  • Play in release order: 4, 5, 6, A:EftP, A:CS, A:Ruined World (forthcoming)
  • Play in story order: A:EftP, A:CS, A:RW (forthcoming), 4, 5, 6

There's no main story or parties carried over from game to game, the way some RPG series do. Each game you control a new party, with all the previous events having happened. So there are some recurring characters, some references to previous events, and so on, but nothing that isn't just backstory. (For example, in one game you have to kill a dragon. In a later game, someone tells you that there used to be more dragons, but one was slain. In one game, you might meet someone in one town. In a later game, you'll find them elsewhere and they'll tell you they moved there recently for reasons.) 4-6 are also a few decades further along in time than the previous trilogy.

The mechanics and graphics engine are revised for each game, so the newer ones are somewhat improved over the older ones, but it's very incremental from game to game. You'll definitely notice, going from A:CS or A:RW to 4, but it's not the equivalent of going from Dragon Age: Inquisition to Jade Empire (which would be approximately the same timeframe for Bioware).

The remake of the third Avernum game has not been released yet. To the best of my knowledge, it's still in alpha development (or at least I haven't received any notifications asking for beta testers yet). So if you want to play Avernum 3, you'll have to purchase the Avernum Saga from GoG.com for $11.99, or simply wait a few years until the next game is released.
