Video game wiki's
Hey buddy, no pun intended. I'm sorry that no one has responded to your post yet. I think I may have found some really good information that may be of use to you! Here is a link to a wiki site dedicated to Endless Space:

Main Page [endlessspace.wikia.com]
Trade Routes [endlessspace.wikia.com]

Wikipedia has paved the way in last decade when it comes to information indexing and sharing, and many people and groups have followed suit. There are hundreds of wiki sites for video games, movies like star wars, t.v. shows and even books like Twilight or the Eragon book.
I hope this information is of use to you. I'll be subscribed to this thread if you wish to post any feedback on my post. Enjoy!
There are a few techs in the Diplomacy tree that give you options for trading with other (known) factions. I believe all but the alliance tech are located on the top-most branch of the diplomacy tree.

And if you're talking about Trade Routes, there are a few techs in both Diplomacy and Science that allow you to build improvements to increase trade.

Generally, you start off with Offer Peace (I don't use it), and then next comes Trade (all forms). Alliance is on the bottom branch, somewhat mid- to late- game. You just need to go into the screen where you see the other factions, and you click the speech bubble to initiate a trade window.

However, do note that you need to have enough of a relationship with an empire before you can actually trade with them (and the requirement varies depending on the target faction). You can boost your relationship by doing what I do best; just do lucrative trades and don't engage in war with factions. Eventually they'll have a better outlook on you.

Thanks, if I understood right the actual routes are automatic but you set it up in the tech tree. I was kind of figuring it would be more difficult than that.

Thanks and I will look at this later...my son is up right now. Oh, and you were the first and I truly do appreciate it.

Trade routes generally are automatic, but you can improve the trade caps and the return percentage via various techs through research. I personally leave trade routes unattended; I don't explicitly pick up any trade boosting techs unless they're prereq(s) to a later tech I need.

I find that trading with other factions is better than trade routes, IMHO. They're faster and easier to earn resources from.

Trading is pretty badly broken in this game. You have to be pretty friendly with a player to trade with them - directly or via routes. To be friendly and maintain friendly status, you pretty much have to either be losing or hopping through a lot of hoops (trading border colonies to another ally, etc). It would be nice if the trading options were unbundled from the diplomacy options or perhaps the game could introduce some sort of caravan unit that can force trade routes.

I love how the CPU thinks trading copper for gold is a good trade...so to say. Its even funnier when an ally gets annoyed when I turn down that sort of request.

Not really. You should learn to just be self-sustaining up until mid-game. By that point, if you just ignore other factions, it should be sufficient enough for their relation to allow you to trade with them. Also note: Certain factions are much harder to please, such as Hissho and Cravers.

The only time (for me) when factions get annoyed are when they keep noticing my "overwhelming ascension". Mainly because I focus heavily on influence and mass colonization and expansion. But they still trade with me regardless.

IMHO, turn down whatever trades you don't think are balanced. Eventually, the relationship will boost back up again.

There's two type of trading, and I suspect some posts answered about one type and some other about the other type.

The road trading is setup from systems to foreign systems. And exchange trading are specific trading done through the diplomacy option.

The first trading type is less sensitive of the relationships but the second trading type is more sensitive and need put care to maintain it.

The first trading type (road trading) is managed a lot automatically you just need open roads in systems by building some buildings increasing number of roads or buildings increasing incomes coming from road trades. For this trade you don't need have open frontiers no peace treaty but you need not be in war. Cold war allows trading if I remember well, this point need be verified.

The second trading type (diplomacy trading) is managed manually and you need make each trade yourself. Those trades are more sensitive to relationships and some AI could break a trades if he starts dislike you a lot. Moreover the more the AI don't like you the more the trade will be difficult. There's plenty possible tricks in that trading type, don't search/expect human behavior of AI, but more search how exploit it and counter balance the tendency of AI to accept only trades a lot better for them. Sometimes an AI will offer you such trade and accept those trades provide a small bonus for your relationship with the AI and not accept a small malus. That second trade type is quite more complex but also can be very powerful.
