So buy this game. It's a good purchase!
Trust me, the only thing is you not understanding the mechanics but the AI doesnt cheat.
If the AI is in peace with you its fleets will not be blocked by your guarding fleets allowing it to move unhindered over/through systems of yours which DONT have an empire sphere (need an Open Border agreement for that to work)
I just convinced my buddy to buy this game and play with me a couple weeks ago (he loves it too btw). Someone who has never played a TBS game like this before. Withing 2 games playing together he had picked up enough to be able to handle Hisshoo/Craver early game blitz without my help. Figure out who your rivals are and plan accordingly. If you are up against highly agressive races then you need to build up your military for defense. Once you have superior tech/cap then go on the offensive and keep them from building more ships to harass you.
EDIT: If you want some advice on military strategy against the AI on normal/easy feel free to add me and I'll be happy to help you.
In the early stages of the game, it's best to try and be diplomatic at first, until you have a good fleet. The best fleets seem to be the smallest ships with maxed out weaponry (either missiles or lasers). Near the end-game, I was cranking out 1-turn dreadnaughts and they just weren't as powerful as a bunch of smaller craft. Probably better for the ground game.
imo the A.I. getting certain bonuses IS cheating, so I feel that this comment is very misleading.
MTB Fritz has stated on a number of threads like this that he doesn't consider bonuses to be cheating, only breaking of game rules. That is his stance on this.
"The game AI follows the exact same rules and mechanics as the human player"
Then I would like YOU to say:
"the AI is cheating because it gets bonuses which I as the human player control"
As long as accusations are made with a 3liner without much explanation as to how thats meant I will respond in kind....thats fair dont you think?
As long as that is not the case the sentence "The AI is cheating" is as, if not more misleading because it comes from the "wrong" definition of the term cheating.
Endless Space has a learning Curve and frustration is part of that. The "cheating" argument will be rising a few more times I m sure but a simple explanation about how bonuses work with difficulty level selected can clear that up.......or researching a bit on your own of course because the information is freely given on a numerous of sources.
