Ys: The Oath in Felghana

Ys: The Oath in Felghana

I don't get it...
I admit I was gifted this game, and I had to try it out. I'm not a big RPG fan, so I guess I don't have a lot to complain about. I just don't get it.

I get that a big part of the game is grinding levels. I get that the bosses are hard. They aren't the problem.

One, the combat mechanic is baffling- you can only turn/walk in the 8 cardinal directions. No strafe style moving. You can't aim ranged attacks. The mouse just sits there like two extra buttons. The collision detection sometimes makes me go 'WUT'. This is real 'virtua fighter' quality.

And even that would be okay if maybe you could buy healing somewhere? Or there was some healing magic? The only shop in town is the blacksmith. Does that come later in the game?

Is this game, like, much older than some of the current trends in combat mechanics? I just don't get a lot of the design decisions here. I'll have to come back to this game later.

Not trying to be butthurt. Maybe.

Well it's good that you tried the game out. The game is from 2005. I like the combat, sure you can only use fire magic in the direction you're facing but I feel that melee is more useful anyway, and that is pretty much straightforward. I did my first run of the game in normal, and I thought it was hard. Then I went to nightmare. I realized normal was a piece of cake then. It sounds like you are frustraded from the combat, I would just suggest taking the difficulty down.
There is a healing item hidden in a certain area which you can go back and acquire partway through the game.
I keep seeing people talking about the game I have to ask is it worth it? I seen the game play does seem a bit old but a good game could have horrible grafics and be amazing so i guess my question is should I buy it?

I recommend it. It's one of the better JRPGs on Steam and a great RPG in general.

I didn't really have a problem with the collision detection. As for healing items, you can get them off monsters you kill, and your HP replenishes each time you level up.

EDIT: Oh, and standing still can heal you in the overworld.

Out of the 52 of 60 levels I gained during the game, I think I had to grind out like...3.
I didn't really do much grinding either, to be honest.
The game requires you to grind up occasionally, but it's never for very long. For eample, when you first make it into the mountain zone, you need to level up a bit to make it through the long, enemy filled section. But there's something addictive about the slashing in this game that makes it forgivable.

On nightmare I had to grind out about 2 levels for the final boss but all the other levels I got just by killing mobs everywhere I went and probably some extra as I spent some time lost. I didn't have much problem with healing although I miss the heal ring from the SNES version :p

The game never requires you to grind, but the lower level you are the fewer mistakes you can make. It's entirely possible to beat every boss in the game without ever taking damage. No undodgeable attacks in the game that I can recall...except maybe Death Faleon's repeated dash attack?

The bosses don't have a time limit and you can repeatedly attempt them until you're used to their mechanics. Not to sound mean to anyone, but I think the main reason people get angry at Ys is that the game requires more patience and concentration than many modern games. You can't just run through it bashing stuff or mashing attack on bosses. You can't screw up a lot and the game doesn't make it immediately obvious how to defeat most of the bosses. Especially true on Nightmare and Inferno.

But yeah, no bosses in the game require you to grind. It just makes them easier.
There's healing items available via the Shopkeeper residing in the exact same building as the Black Smith...
OP, from the sounds of it, its probably best you play on Very Easy. Any higher than that requires skill you don't seem to have. And just to iterate what evryone else has said, you don't grind in this game. You CAN, but the game is designed to challenge you if you play without grinding, Y'know, because overcoming a challenge is more rewarding than being handed the win. Work for it. Or, like I said, play on Very Easy
I would strongly recommend using a controller if you aren't already.

There is no level grinding in this game, unless you want to get all the Steam achievements.

The retro gameplay mechanics are one of the main reasons Ys is awesome!
