Max Payne 3

Max Payne 3

Bought Max Payne 3 and here my two cents:
The story and the narrative alone make it worth the purchase, but the gameplay, not so much. I loved Max Payne 1, the MP2 was okay, but MP3... damn this game is frustrating.

Been playing the game on normal and you gonna swallow pills like smarties, because the gunplay mechanic is a royal pain in the ♥♥♥.

In MP3 you can carry a 2 handed weapon, but every time there is a cutscene (and there is a lot of them) Max always switch to his pistol and after 98.5% of the cutscenes, there is a gun battle with many enemies rushing you and you are forced to take some damage because you gotta switch back to your ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ 2H weapon who is more appropriate for X gunbattle...

Enemies are all expert marksmans, if there is an empty space of 1 square centimeter, from over a bar counter, two tables and chairs and the ramp of the staircase you are climbing, you gotta believe me, this bullet will find his way in your face, taking 3/4 of your life and forcing to take your quite rare bottles of pills... and the fight barely started! It will be like that during the whole game.

The cover system is atrocious, just another easy way to get you killed. If you're crouched behind something and wanna make a roll to push foward and take cover again behind something low, at the end of his roll, Max will stand tall on his feet like an imbecile, taking damage and forcing to once again heal yourself because of a poorly implented mechanic.

Compared to MP1, even on normal, the enemies can absorb a lot of damage unless it's a headshot. So don't bother with body shots, bulletproof vest or not.

The shoulder cam is also another problem, another cheap way of getting you killed, as there's no key to switch the camera from a shoulder to another, making indoor fights especially frustrating (but in fact, even when you're outside and use the corner of a wall as cover, you're getting ♥♥♥♥ed by the shoulder camera).

And finally beware of every corner and door frame in this game, even if you cleared the whole room, a guy with a shotgun will pop-up and kill you or take 3/4 of your life. If it's a open area, as soon as you're done clearing an area and make two steps, another wave of enemies will show up.

Oh and I almost forgot, Rockstar DRM is a pain in the ♥♥♥, forcing you to login in their ♥♥♥♥ty Rockstar community whatever before even reaching the main menu...what the hell?

So yeah like I said, the narrative and story are great, glad I paid 3 bucks for it.

I wish the effing game would just open so I could play it.
Looking through a near bottom bottle, the devs seeked out to make another gold dice Max Pain. Only what they got was mirror of the former image of the days long gone. A messed up port from a messed up era. Quick time events with a fifth of the game based around turret missions. It was a stack of bricks that hit this once golden eye name of Max Pain. It was just another copy of the mill shooter that lost its footing. It was only the start of the ♥♥♥♥ pile that awaited. The AI have no personality just another bot that the world wouldn't miss. The main store of the missions could have been guess the outcome a quarter the way through. And the so call side quest, were just another copy of the modern era - getting golden gun parts. Shame really they could have pice back the bits of a broken pass. What am I, just another drunk who pops pills and get women shot. This luck of Max Pain ran out long ago; with this fat old max. Fighting other peoples battles with a run speed of an old women who is about to kick the can. This is Max, the hero that doesn't know when to stop.

I don't understand why you are complaining about the cover system in a Max Payne game. When was the last time you played MP1? These games are all about running and gunning as fast as you can. The developers have said cover was only meant to give you a quick rest from the action.

Oh? Are you actually gonna pretend that you didn't notice that levels were designed with PLENTY of cover spots? Hell the whole game is about cover and run... Stop being a hypocrite and quit wasting my time.

If the game is too challenging for you, try lowering the difficulty settings. Press H to switch shoulder cams.

Poorly designed mechanics does not constitute a challenge and I don't even understrand why you're defending this kind of ♥♥♥♥....

His advice is sound, you find yourself dying I suggest you tone the difficulty down. Personally I'm not finding the game excessively hard, and I'm doing my first run on hard difficulty. Even on hard the game seems to be quite generous when you get a bottle of pills if you die 3 or so times at a certain point.

All in all I don't really think this game is comparable nor does it beling with the first two, as Rockstar turned it into something completety different. I wouldn't say it's better or worse, but I can say I'm enjoying the hell out of it.

Where did I ever say in my original post the difficulty was too high? I did the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game on normal ffs... All I did was complaining about the cheap mechanic used to create the difficulty.

I love how people sweep this kind of lame ♥♥♥♥ under the carpet and call it "challenge".

MP3 is not a cover based shooter, it has a cover-based mechanic but you're not suppose to be relient on it because you'll get flanked or shot sticking your head out too long. Someone said it already, the cover mechanic is to give you rest from the action and on the harder difficulties you need to strategize your cover/shooting, shoot dodge, slow mo, effectively. Its definitely challenging but i wouldn't call it unfair.

I have never played Max Payne 1 and 2. I just finished Max Payne 3, took me 11 hours, and I just couldn't wait for it to finish.

Before Max Payne 3, I played Sleeping Dogs. I enjoy story games. I enjoyed Sleeping Dog's story, and I kept playing because I wanted to see how the story would play out.

In contrast, I kept playing Max Payne 3 because I just couldn't wait for it to be over. The story was incoherent. I didn't know what was going on. It was just too painfully obvious that I was merely going from point A to point B to see some story.

The cutscenes were also bad because they kept doing these flashes and blurs and seeing double. It's like they are trying to mimic Payne being high or drunk. It was irritating and annoying.

Gameplay I guess it was ok. But I heard that Max Payne 2's bullet time increases whenever you kill an enemy in bullet time, making your bullet time almost last forever. That sounds cool. In Max Payne 3 however, bullet time does not increase if you kill people in it. There were times I felt pressured not to use it because I wanted to kill someone in normal time to recharge bullet time.

The only way I can recommend this game is when it goes on sale and is cheap, and you got money to burn. But otherwise, I just didn't enjoy the game.

first of all, you suck at this game. second, there is a slow motion mechanic coincidentally called "bullet time" that can be used to plant shots and manuever past enemy fire. perhaps you should rely on that rather than the pills. it's mentioned by several posters for your conveniene but i figured i would hammer it home: there is this wonderful thing called "key binding". complaining about which button does what on a forum makes you look rather foolish when 99.375% of all games now have a "key binding" feature, even the consoles do too.

and no one catches this but it you put a magazine in a dude's chest you quickly recharge your "bullet time" for immediate use. this creates great moments where you jump out, help the first guy don a 9mm blazer then put the remainder of the magazine in 3 other dude's slow mo suprised faces. near the end of the game it gets ridiculously easy because body armor also recharges slow mo. having trouble? blind fire more. dont camp and shoot for the chest.

AND FOR THE RECORD, THIS GAME HAS THE BEST PHYSICS ENGINE EVER PUT IN A VIDEOGAME. DONT LIKE IT? GO TO HELL!
best shooter game ever made. good luck finding this kind of awesomeness in an unreal powered game.

Can you debate on something without opening with an insult first? Because no one read what you have to say after that.

I have to agree with Ragin'Dude, I played through the original games and this one is shallow, cheap version compared to those two, from the storyline to artificially ramping up the difficulty of the game by requiring you to cling to cover just to stop losing a third of your life to 1 pistol bullet.
Compared to the original two the storyline is extremely weak, at least in those two we have personal motivation for protagonist, first one it was to catch his wife and child's killers, second one it was all about him and Mona Sax. Yet in MP 3 not only does he leave NYC for the weakest of reason's, he also has next to zero personal motivation in sticking around after the ♥♥♥♥ hits the fan.
The game was never a cover-based game, you ran into a room, activated slow-mo and cleaned it out, not sit there after a cut-scene and watch the NPC's run to cover while you're forced to wait, then proceed to duck and hide, picking off targets as they poke their heads outs.

Compared to the original gems by Remedy it's quite obvious that Rockstar don't quite get what made Max Payne a classic, hell we don't even get the comic book strips from the original two, in it's place we get this visual distortion that the developers well and truely over use, just as bad a J.J Abrams and his light flares.

If you changed the name of the game to 'Drunk man in South America' then I might not be so pissed off, but this is max payne and it's nothing like the original two.

OP is bang on about this game. Fortunately, I bought this on a Steam Sale so I hardly feel bad for uninstalling after just a few short hrs with this clunky mess. Both MP1 and 2 are far better games. This one has a fun deficit.
