Why are there so many sex organ images/references?

What did all the not-very-discreet images of sexual organs have to do with anything?

They're drawn in many, many places on cave walls. There's also a g.o.a.t.s.e, or 2 (the detailed one is upside down on a rock wall on a beach). The cave stalactites all have "heads" and are shaped like uncircumcised d.i.c.k.s rather than natural stalactites that narrow towards the tip. If you look upwards into the waterfalls and other certain water areas, it seems that the curvature of the rocks is habitually layered to resemble something, with the water coming out. The game is filled will with sex organ depictions.

Well, as luck would have it I went to visit caves in the Ardennes yesterday. Actually most of the stalagmites looked pretty much like phalli (resulting in a lot of giggling).

This resembles a gaping hairy vag with a triangle notch at the top to imitate the splitting labia, with the waterfall acting like an 'gasm, and the inside folds represented as well

Last few shots are wonderful, in that I see absolutely nothing resembling what you're talking about. First two are still kind of bizarre interpretations. I've seen Dear Esther called a lot of things, but I'd never expected it to be some kind of Rorschach test. Perhaps you should talk to someone.

Well, honestly, if someone can't see the clear images that aren't missing a single line to complete their depiction, then they likely ought to see an optometrist. I think the only way a person could really not be able to see it after having it pointed out is if they really didn't want to see it coz it lessened their impression of the game or something. It lessened the impression of the game for me, but it's there, in full and without missing any lines to complete the diagram. So if it's on anybody's subconscious, it was the developer's, though I doubt it was unintended.

If you think that they're beautiful, what do you suppose they are meant to be, then? I assume it's supposed to be linked to the main character's state of mind, and his longing for the chick he got killed, but who knows.

It's about as peculiar as the game having a serious narrative about a guy getting syphilis from screwing goats.

Well, your interpretation is your interpretation, of each scene and of the piece as a whole. I see how a particular shape could look like a sex organ, but that doesn't mean I see the images that way - I'm not going to interpret every vaguely triangular shape in a game as vaginal, or every long thing as phallic.

Oh wait, you're talking about the paintings on the walls? I thought you were looking at shapes of rocks or something (other than when you explicitly were with the stalagmites, obviously). Geez. No. They're synapses and electrical diagrams. And the reason I wouldn't even begin to see them as anything else is because I played the 2009 mod when it came out and they were synapses and electrical diagrams there, too. Any relationship to sex organs is, I believe, entirely coincidental.

But who can really say for sure, I guess.

Please tell me you're kidding.

1 - That much more closely resembles an eye if you move a little further forward before looking up, as evidenced by the dialog during that part that specifically talks about a flashlight in the eye seeming like looking up from the bottom of a well.

2 - That's how stalagmites look.

3 - On the left is a synapse. The right is some form of flowery drawing. You really saw something phallic in that the first time you looked at it??

4 - I don't see how that could look anything like goat-se. Looks much more like an electrical diagram.

5 - Those are plants! I consider myself a perverted person, but good grief.

Also, nowhere in the story does it mention that the guy got syphilis from having sex with goats. While that is the primary form of transmission for syphilis, it is not the only one.

Actually, it does.

Syphillis - Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the spirochete bacterium Treponema pallidum subspecies pallidum. The primary route of transmission is through sexual contact; it may also be transmitted from mother to fetus during pregnancy or at birth, resulting in congenital syphilis.

Maybe he got it from them by being born from a goat?
