It's not even a real game
First let me state that this IS NOT A GAME.

This "game" has very little to no story. It has narration but there is no true story. No real ending and nothing to do in game. It's like walking through an art gallery but it costs $10+

It's basically an art project, you follow bread crumbs that are few and far between just to get to the next narration segment and then you're on your own again. A game needs a certain kind of interactive to be called a game. Holding W does not qualify

There are a lot of dead ends and then it's frustrating because you have to go back to the last place you were ever so slowly. This is not a game, it is at best an interactive art gallery and not worth the full price and doesn't even deserve to be on steam with the genre's like "adventure"

So the thousands and more people who liked it should never ever allowed to play it?
Nice empathy bro.
Try to play starting with third chapter (Caves) and you may change your impression of this game. Two first chapters are really a test of patience althought they are beautiful too.

Love to, I'd have to look up a walkthrough first. Glad I got this game free I recall.

Doesn't need to be on Steam, you can get it as steam-free version here http://dear-esther.com/?page_id=789
Steam does not need to have it listed here as "adventure"

I love this game, the story is amazing. Everytime you play it, different parts of the story are given to you. There are 4 levels, and each one is beautiful in audio and art direction. My favorite levels are level 3 (caves) and level 4 (night-time). I love them all, but those last 2 levels are amazing in detail. I get emotional playing the game, because of the way the audio and narrative speak to me.
Steam needs an "art" catagory or "narrative"

Yes, free for 9.99$.
You don't like it fine, why they should pick out the store for that?
The cost is justified for some and isnt for others. But you can't decide what deserves to be on Steam and what doesn't. Don't like it, don't play it. Don't want it on Steam, your problem.
Anyway if you read carefully it say Steam-free version, not free version. Its way different. Who's the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ who gift their own game by his portal when it's selled all over the internet?
Now i respect all opinions from everybody. But sadly, i think the OP in incorrect. Allow me to explain. I think the fact that Dear Esther is on steam is a wonderful thing. It shows that are freinds over at valve respect and accept all types of games. If its art and narrative, or blood and guts, the gamer should be able to play what ever game he/she wants.

Personally i thought every penny spent on this title was well worth it. i dont believe a game require interaction to be amazing or good. Dear Esther is a perfect example of showing what video games are capable of, story telling and graphically wise.

I said Steam-free as in it doesn't HAVE to be on steam. You can buy the game stand alone. FFS at least don't list it under adventure.

Of course but how do you call this a game when you have to walk painstakingly slow and just continue to hold W the entire time while a narator speaks and you get caught in dead ends. How is that fun? I understand if you like the "story" or graphics (they're nothing special) but at least have it under a more appropriate catagory. If I looked up adventure games and bought this I would be really pissed since it tells you hardly anything about the game and what you're supposed to do within the game.

You didn't make out of the first level, don't you? I bet you lost down the cliff after the "windmill" line. If you bother to listen the dialogues.
But hey it's fine, it's not a game that appeal you, so why don't you stop act like a child and let other play what they want instead of pretending nobody enjoy it?

Didn't say nobody enjoyed it but to call it a "game" and have it listed under "adventure" is misleading.
And so? Next time do some reaserch instead of "Ehy an adventure, i must buy" totally blind.
And for god's sake, why they should remove from Steam? Are you insane or what?
