I find the surfave very unappealing in its current state. Currently I use the surface to just throw my storage pieces onto so that monsters go for somethng less important like food and the stone when they get to where my dwarves are housed up.
you sir read my mind was it in colour ? :P
Why can't you plant food up there? Farming is my primary use for the surface! You can only plant food up there on grass maps though, not in desert or in the snow, but that just makes sense.
+1 to the original post. More importantly than minecraft-style slopes though, is a higher 'ceiling' on the surface so we can build multiple stories up there. As it stands, even rooves for buildings are impossible because there is literally only 1 block of buildable space. In addition, I don't know whether ranged dwarves can currently fire their weapons diagonally downards - i.e, if you build a wall out of those wooden blocks, then added stairs, could your marksmen shoot baddies attacking the barrier?
Also, moar enemies on the surface pl0x!
