How do you "bank" your score in THE JOKER'S CARNIVAL?

What does it mean to "bank" your score exactly and how does one do that banking at any time?

"THE JOKER'S CARNIVAL: Fill the meter by fighting enemies, then bank at any time to collect the points you've built up and raise your score. As the meter rises higher the rewards are greater, but so are the risks. Earn the highest scorebefore the time runs out."
