teamspeak /chat coming out of main speakers?

Hi I had a quick game with my friend (push to talk was off) but our voices were coming out of the main speakers not the headset. Not played him again yet with push to talk on. When he tried the audio menu the game crashed. If we get PTT turned on will we be able to use Steam private chat?, that kept coming up "In use by game" or simlar with it off??
