"A ton" is an overstatement. Yes, there are a ton of servers but 90% are ghost towns or filled with bots. I don't get why these people run dead servers. There are about 5 (standard gameplay) popular/active servers and several alternative gameplay servers. Activity varies depending on the time/times zones.

The game is dead competitively, although there is a mini Wireplay league starting soon. But a good amount of activity pub wise.

Far from it. when this game was at it's peak, it was THE most popular online shooter before CS took it's spot and even after that it was comfortably behind in second place.

This game was and really still is ingenious. It was far ahead of its time as far as multiplayer and team-player is concerned. But take it from someone who actually plays and sits around watching the only 2 real servers left for people to come on so he can play. TFC is a dead game. Even the original Halo and Unreal Tournament and Quake has more human players than TFC does now.

The game would still be going a lot stronger if TF2 hadn’t come out. Trust me when I tell you, because I was there and was running 2 tfc servers and watched it happen. Before TF2 came, there were 10 servers that always had humans and could form a Top 10 server list. I kept up with the stats and rankings because I ran 2 tfc servers during the end times and my server was in the top 10 until TF2 came out. There were a regular 2000 players for TFC right until the time when TF2 came out. It used to be Steam kept up with this human count in its stats, too, but TFC stopped showing on it a long time ago. TF2 totally drained TFC of what few human regular players it had left.

We started getting a few passer-bys when Valve started giving TFC away free with a purchase of TF2, but that didn’t really help much. I added a lot of friends because of Valve giving TFC away, but I didn’t get any regulars. They all went back to TF2. The newer younger generation didn’t like going backwards and they hated the old graphics.

So I payed 2 programmers to make some plugins for me to see if I could get the TF2 players to stay. For example, I had it fixed to where the TF2 player skins could be used in TFC and I gave the Scout a samurai sword instead of a crowbar. The sword could kill in 3 hits (4 hits for the hwguy) but just one hit to the back like the spy knife. I put bags on the maps that only engies could pick up to help make engies more fun to play, etc. I had the first server that used the smart bots (and last version of the bots that really no one knew even existed until I put them up). I created new waypoints for the bots so they work better on the Dustbowl map and actually guard the cap and stop stealing bags. There were other plugins I had made, but my point is I tried to do something to help keep the game going and I spent a ton of money on it. My server was probably the only server up that didn't share space with other servers. That is, I rented the whole "box" . . . not just "space" on one computer that was shared by other customers. $250 a month so I could make sure my plugins could be run.

Then 2 or 3 years ago someone finally made a plugin that allowed the original game to be played with Steam servers. . . you know, the game that was sold before Steam took over. Alot of those players that had the "box" game came back and started playing again but so did the children of those people who had bought the pre-Steam version. And that's really how the Evil Dustbowl server got started with so many humans. It's one of the remaining 2 servers left that still gets humans on it.

But I think just about everything that could be done to get more humans has been tried now. There's been another post about making the game free. That would help temporarily, but it's already so cheap, I really don't think that's going to help much long-term. The "free" players would just join the multitude of bot servers that are up.

What we really need is for Valve to let a group of dedicated volunteers to work on updating the game (small fixes that the vets need and would want) and update the 2 main maps left that people still play (dustbowl and 2fort).

We can also wait and see what happens with the beta thingie that Valve is trying to do with Mac users. I've seen first-hand what a new plugin and some advertising can do to bring old players back. I have no idea what's going to happen with mac users LOL!

So there you go. TFC is just legacy now.

"as a legacy, you will be named 'FLOUNDER' "
I've gone back to TFC a little bit lately, but I've not run into as many people as I had back in the old days of playing it. And the majority of players I find don't speak english.
Get on IRC Gamesurge #tfc.pickup and #tfc.invite
The last 30 players from day1 that played the top level of TFC leagues and still scrim every day atleast once...
