Cannot begin the game?

Hi. I reach the menu screen ( I want to play with a controller ) and I'm hitting Enter, Spacebar, all the buttons on my XBOX controller and nothing happens??? ( Only the arrow keys work )

List of flaws in this game

Oh my, so many bad game design decisions in so small a game... 1. Wait... 10+ hits to beat THE FIRST ENEMIES IN THE GAME ? WTF ? 2. Wait... You need to PAY to save ? 3. Oh, well, no matter: I'll just farm the VERY FIRST SCREEN until I buy all HP upgrades. 4. Ok, so pressing this button opens the menu but pressing it again DOES NOT close the menu ? 5. Wait.. Is this a platformer game where you CAN'T control the height of your jump ? 6. (First fire flower) Oh, nice Mario reference here. (First Spiky)...
