security update. basically, theres a bug with the source engine that makes it possible for people to download malware and ♥♥♥♥ by masking as something like a spray or something. By disabling custom files you can prevent that

There is the option to only download maps though, which I think should be the default for that reason.

I think it's better safe then sorry. The bug allowed a server to download any malware if you joined, and the easiest way people did this in other games was to just make a server disguised as one of the popular ones like SBP.

If you need custom maps, can't you just download them from the PVK sites?

What's wrong with the setting only downloading maps by default? Also, a lot of players don't download the maps manually or even touch this setting. And for whatever reasons the setting goes back to default after a while.

Not exactly sure what your getting at, but I don't think the team has had the time to make custom maps exempt from the filter, or maybe any custom files can be used for the expoit, I don't know enough about it to say.
At any rate, the maps manually now, and whether or not most players do that it's still an easy solution.

People have had their Steam account hijacked, items stolen, malware added, passwords for various things taken and used, and at the worst could completely shut down someone computer with viruses/etc. These are things that have all happened. It is best to be on the safe side now because if not, our playerbase might get affected or hijacked, blame it on the devs because they don't know better, and tarnish the game's reputation, which, while good, it is still trying to grow. It is better to have the game a little less active for awhile then come back full force, maybe with an update right after it, than to leave the players who fdon't know better at risk.

As for the map thing, I'm 80% sure it's been proven that malware can be hidden and put into a map, so you gotta be careful.
