Well the Grubbs helped him escape -- The Grubb leader (Frayda Evryting) says that they rescused him. They also gave him better clothing and replaced his old bow. This allows Stranger to embrace himself as a Steef and not hide, so, I presume he abandonned his old clothing once he realised who he was.
