Assasin's Creed Freezing/Lag Fix
When I installed the game I would get massive lag during:
1. Intro video
2. Lag spike right after killing an enemy
3. Lag during synchronization

Assasin's Creed 2 works flawlessly on my current system. If you are experiencing the above here is the fix below:

Fix #1:
Play in offline mode and also disconnect your computer from the internet.
Blocking the game executable from accessing internet using windows firewall does not seem to work.

Fix #2:
Go to the folder C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc
Edit the file called "hosts" using notepad
Add the following lines at the end of the file:

216.98.48.18 127.0.0.1
216.98.48.53 127.0.0.1
216.98.48.57 127.0.0.1
216.98.48.133 127.0.0.1
216.98.48.134 127.0.0.1

For me the complete hosts file looks like this:

# Copyright (c) 1993-2006 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost
::1 localhost
216.98.48.18 127.0.0.1
216.98.48.53 127.0.0.1
216.98.48.57 127.0.0.1
216.98.48.133 127.0.0.1
216.98.48.134 127.0.0.1

There have been similar fixes in this forum but I felt that I should add some more details for anyone else having this issue.

I feel disappointed that I have to fix the game like this. I have already posted a complaint to Ubisoft. Let us see if they respond and release a patch (I doubt it)... sigh.
The pirated copies of this game apparently does not have this issue. It is sad when pirated copies are a better functioning game. :(

UPDATE:
I had contacted Ubisoft and they have replied with the following:

------------------------------------
Hello ,

We are aware of the problem, and it is related to a server that performed stats tracking going down. The server has since been fixed, but the DNS is taking time to propagate through the whole of the internet. As things stand, it's simply a matter of waiting for your ISP to update their DNS servers. You can try using public DNS servers, such as Google's, but I can provide you with direct support in this.

I apologize for the inconvenience,
Ubisoft Technical Support

Thanks for this!!. Once I got it to save on my PC, it works. I used option #2 and pasted this in the file...

216.98.48.18 127.0.0.1
216.98.48.53 127.0.0.1
216.98.48.57 127.0.0.1
216.98.48.133 127.0.0.1
216.98.48.134 127.0.0.1

My file matched the same. Win 7 64 bit. Up to date on updates.

Thanks again.

Thanks, fix 2 worked for me!

Fix 2 confirmed as working for Windows XP as well, you only need to copy the second line of the list too, as it is not present in the hosts file (::1 localhost). The complete file should then look the same as in above. Thanks for the fix :-)

Fix #2 is just fine to use. Thank you for this quick repair job. I've wanted to play this game for a while, and it astounded me when my desktop was having issues with it (seeing as it is a rather high-end computer). I am glad i always go to the forums here to find what I'm looking for. :)

Found this on Google, regarding the "permissions" issue.

How to Grant Permissions in Windows 7

1. Locate the file or folder in which you want to take ownership in Windows Explorer.
2. Right click on file or folder and select Properties from the Menu
3. Click on the Security tab, then click the Edit button. Click OK to confirm UAC elevation request if needed.
4. Select user/group from permission windows or click add to add other user or group (you may need to do this for multiple users - ex: administrator and your own user account).
5. Now under the Permission section check the rights which you want for the user i.e check "Full Control" under the "Allow" column to assign full access rights control permissions to the user.
6. Click OK for changes to take effect, and click OK again to exit from the Properties window.

Seems like it would work but it's greyed out so I can't click the allow on the full control or any other options. There's only one account/user/admin and I'm currently using it. Any other ideas?
Thanks btw
