Doubt about eyes open/closed

What is the point of open and close the eyes? To the creature don't see me? This is not explained in the game... I am just curious because I got killed both ways

Spoiler Question: Lab Area

How the frick do I lock that alien in Lab G? I tried running in there and closing my eyes to lock the door at least 10 times and can't ever get the timing down. I'm either too late and it kills me while my eyes are closed OR I'm too early and after I lock the door, it's outside waiting to kill me again. :-/ Can someone do a YouTube playthrough of this game and maybe I'll just watch it? lol\ Thanks in advance!...
