Is there a regular mode?

I played through the tutorial, which was pretty fun, but then I found myself on a character select screen for what looks like an RPG. I may get to those later, but is there no way to just play the multicolour, no greys version I played in the tutorial?

All characters except Mono are "multicolor" mode.

But all of the characters have some other feature added to them that's not in the tutorial. I'm not really interested in playing with powerups, or in first person. But I guess that's not an option, which seems very strange to me.
