I was in your situation, and I know this comment won't help completly, but what I did was played it and played it, getting hot and sweaty untill I finally got it out of the way so I can continue the game. I am afraid that's all I know of, but I know what you are going through.

That was so easy. I got up to 1,800 points (beating the high score easily) on my first attempt and then got bored and stood there and let my lives run out.

My advice is to stay near the middle and let the food come to you in the later stages. Don't chase after the little pieces of food either, since it's not worth the risk for so little a weight gain.

Are you using the keyboard? That might make it a bit more difficult. I used a gamepad and didn't have any problems.
