Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

PC Controller Suggestions?
I've already read up and know my corded 360 controller won't work perfectly with it, I was wondering if anyone here knows what the best PC controller, or at least one that worked for you, is to use with San Andreas. Thanks to anyone that provides a helpful answer.

I don't see why you'd want to use a controller for PC. One of the main reasons I dislike Rockstar games on console is the auto-aim feautre and controlling the cameras.

I've honestly never played a Rockstar game on PC, I only recently acquired something that can even barely handle San Andreas, it's more a problem of being used to the controller than thinking it's technically superior.

then it sounds like you should try not playing with a controller. took me about 5 minutes to get used to
That's nice. My personal preference is still a controller. I'll use the keyboard/mouse and it isn't that bad, but I still prefer the controller. I've been looking to get another controller so I can play multiplayer games like Castle Crashers and the like when I have a friend over, I figured if I can also find one that works with this, it's an inherent plus. Also, the touch pad on my laptop (which is what I have) doesn't work all that well with most rotating camera systems.
buy a mouse....

I use a logitech dual action. but the joysticks are fit into square holes so its not very smooth. I got used to it though.

I use this too but for some reason I'm having trouble reconfiguring it. And what's odd is the last time I played SA, not the Steam version, the controller was correctly mapped to whatever it should be.

okay, i had the same issue

go into options

switch to joypad mode

then reset controls to default

then go into back into the game
thats wht fixed the controller mapping for me.

Some games feel better with a controller. Obviously a mouse and keyboard allows for a lot more functionality and is better for pretty much every game. That doesn't mean using a controller doesn't have its aesthetic, nostalgic, and relaxing feel sometimes. I know most games I go m/kb but every now and then I like to sit back and just hold a controller instead.

I'm using the Logitech F710 wirless controller. Everything works PERFECT. One very important info is that the F710 has a XInput/DirectInput slider on the top. Xlinput is the old school button configation that uses numbers to indentify which buttons you use. DirectInput is more of the xbox controller layout such as A,B,X and Y. When you play GTA SA make sure you set the slider on top to Xlinput mode. All buttons work even the right analog stick can be used to control the camera. Using DirectInput (Xbox Style) on older games won't play properly such as the trigger buttons not reading at all. I love the xbox controller so much more but I use the F710 for older games.
There's actually a decent amount of quality gaming controllers out there, I don't see the need for the condescension. Takes 5 minutes to get used to the keyboard and mouse? The default keyboard mapping is clunky and unsmooth. Flying (plane/heli) is stupidly difficult at first. Drive-by's take getting use to as well.I'm not too much a fan of Logitech products, but the f710 (wireless) is a good buy.

I think you must be confusing those two... XInput is what the XBOX controllers use, and only few others; this being one of those few that can actually send XInput.
Practically everything before it used DirectInput.

The great thing about the slider is not that it allows remapping (which seems to be what you mean), but that you can use it for most games that support any type of gamepad, be it 'x360 only!' or 'x360 pad not supported, normal gamepads only'. Without having to use an alternative wrapper like X360CE to allow your old pad to send it's data as XInput, thus looking like an x360 pad to the game.

Oh, and on the main topic:
Now playing SaintsRow3 with a controller just so I can kick back, chill and game... have to say that it's bloody annoying not being able to swing around quickly to see/shoot whatever that's shooting me in my back, that's one DEFINITE pro that mice bring to games like these.
Also the satisfaction of slamming space bar to skid around corners is without equal on a controller.
