Does the DLC makes the game harder?
Hi all,

I heard that the DLC made the game harder, and it wasn't possible to go back to the "normal" version of the game. As the game AND his DLC are in promotion, I wanted to take it, but I don't want to be even more frustrated by my first games than it shoud be :3

If I don't take it, am I missing something huge?

All in all, I think DLC is pretty dififculty neutral, I think. The alternate levels and some of the bosses are tougher than their core counterparts, but on the other hand we have items like Epic Fetus, and it's much easier to get flying items. Seriously, I haven't died once in a run that I've gotten Epic Fetus in, and you miss out on a lot of content without the DLC.

The DLC does make the game harder, because of alternate floors that pop up, as well as some harder enemies and bosses which only appear in the DLC. But, it also gives a lot of content that you'll miss out in the long run.

So, my suggestion, is to buy Wrath of the Lamb by itself, as a gift. That way you can keep it in your inventory and unlock it when you feel that you're ready for the extra content.

Well, sir, you are a genius, never thought of this way. By doing this, I'll be able to play with the DLC whenever I want, and I still can buy it while it's in promotion.

THANK YOU SO MUCH YOU 2.

The dlc adds about 70% more to the game

I bought the DLC after falling in love with the vanilla game and I miss the vanilla game. It's not that I don't like Wrath of the Lamb, it's that I miss getting nothing but low powerewd items and being in a constant and perpetual state of desperation. The first item I got after installing Wrath of the Lamb was a dead cat; 9 lives. Are you serious? What an overpowered item. I just want to be able to play the vanilla game. Maybe if I start a new steam account?

Exactly how is this overpowered? Especially if you pick it up near the end of the game. No way you're gonna beat Isaac or ??? consistently with one heart even if you get 9 tries (not saying it can't be done, it's just unlikely).

Also: dead cat is an item from the vanilla game, not from the DLC.

Really wish I thought of that at the time, but oh well the dlc can't be too bad.

You are right on both accounts.
I still want to play the vanilla version though (not because the DLC is bad, but because I am a purist) and I found a way since I bought it through the Humble Bundle, I can download the vanilla game from their site and just play it from that executable.
Wrath of the Lamb really changes the tone. I'll want to play it later, but there is something about the vanilla that I have grown attached to.

DLC definitely makes the game a lot harder. I would not recommend anybody get the DLC until they've unlocked at least half the items in the base game.

I don't understand: what does the fact to unlock and discover some items help when you have the DLC? You start every play "naked", this shouldn't change anything, right? (I've only played like 20 times now, died everytime at max 3rd basement. I suck, but I like it :p )

Because when you'll have DLC it will be harder to earn this items. For example "take no damage" achievements is alot easily to earn when there isn't any of new floors added by DLC.
Rakanishu 30. nov. 2012 kl. 5.05
Oh it also adds new floors, OK. Let's stick to the vanilla game for now :p

I'd say the 'no damage' achievements are easier because you can do them in challenges like 'Isaac was good today' or 'Spiderboy'. You also don't have to do it for the new floors, only for the ones in the vanilla game.

This is true. It's 50/50. It will be harder and easier at the same time. But under new floors I meant alternative version of existing ones.
As for me, I bought WoTL as soon as it was released :) As m3m3nt0 mentioned, with some challenges it is even easier to unlock boys achievements, so you can try to obtain all other of them without DLC and then buy it. But, I will say again, for me it was not a problem as I didn't mind it when WoTL was released, so it is for you to decide :)
P.S. I unlocked Basement Boy by the accident without even trying to do so. You can be lucky to do it as well while unlocking all other achievements without DLC cause of lack of new annoying enemies which will appear on new alternative floors.
