Why does mom's death animation do damage?

So I just had a pretty good run with magdalene+the virus and some other stuff. I made a few careless mistakes during the mom fight so i ended up with half a heart. I still managed to beat her though.... but i was standing in her foot's shadow, and for some reason it exploded when she died, killing me. So yeah, that was the stupidest death i ever had xD

I've been wondering this for a long time, never asked anyone. Does someone have the answer?

When the foot is targeted at you, it instantly comes down in an 'explosion' if you haven't moved from where the foot would have landed. You'll never get hit in this 'explosion' if your last hit to Mom is done to her foot.

This prevented me from getting Dark Boy once. Got through Necropolis XL without damage, and then of course the explosion got me. :|
